Halkına uluslararası arenada tanınan, bağımsız ve egemen bir devlet bırakan Aliya, 19 Ekim 2003 tarihinde saat 14.25'te Saraybosna'da vefat etti.Gerek liderlik vasfı gerekse felsefi kişiliği nedeniyle Türkiye'de "Bilge Kral" olarak adlandırılan Aliya'nın cenazesine dünyanın her yerinden 150'binden fazla insan katıldı. Ölmeden önce şehitlerin arasında mütevazi bir mezara defnedilmek istediğini yetkililere aktaran Aliya'nın kabri, başkent Saraybosna'daki Kovaçi Şehitliği'nde bulunuyor.Hayatı TRT 1’de diziye konu edildi.
