Pentax K10D Digital Camera |
|
|
|
|
Windows Viewer cannot give sharp photos to screen. Other software, which is produced for picture viewing, are recommended.
SOFTWARE
Bundled Pentax Photo Laboratory software (like the one with K100D) has limited functions. The software is developed by Silkypix, but in the Pentax, Silkypix own software is best.
Usage of pro version of Silkypix or Photoshop will result in better-edited photos. It is pretty fast when converting RAW files to TIFF or JPEG, but you have no option to edit jpeg photo.
K10D's other RAW option is open-source DNG format. It can be easily handled with Adobe's brand-new software LightRoom. It has pretty much most editing options.
My personal recommendation is using DNG format when shooting RAW, to maximize the benefits from 22 bit A/D converter.
LENSES
The two kit lenses, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 50-200mm f/4-5.6, deliver exceptional value, when the prices are considered. The performance of the tele-lens is especially good and there is no need for extra lens in that range.
Great performance of the camera will be revealed when the new dust and water sealed high quality lenses are on the market.
Shown lenses, DA 16-50mm. F/2.8 ED, DA 50-135mm. F/2.8 ED, DA 60-250mm. F/4 ED will be dust and water resistant - just like K10D.
Old Pentax lenses (DA, DFA, FAJ, FA, F9) can be used in K10D. There is also Pentax LIM series lenses -limited production-, which has high resolution, high quality optics and zero-error.
After our K10D review was completed, I've found a 35-year-old Prost brand lens. (This section has been added to review in order to show backwards compability).
Seller told me that the price for the lens is $18! So I immediately bought it. Lens is Prost branded, 55mm, F1.2, manual and fairly corrupted.
When I turned the camera on with this lens, it asked me focal distance, I've choosed 55mm and activated SR function. At first I couldn't believe the performance of this museum-old lens. During turning the focus ring, when the subject comes into focus, AF point is imposed. Pressing the green button, the camera measures the light amount and gives proper shutter speed.
Normally, this lens was expected nearly impossible to be used today. But I couldn't think that using manual lens could be this easy.
You can see some sample photos of K10D and this $18 lens.
IMGP0457 is shot in studio environment. IMGP0475 is taken at home, with built-in flash.
In camera settings are
Sharpness +3
Saturation 0
Contrast 0
Aperture value of IMGP0457 is F/11 and IMGP0475 is F5.6. Photos are only resized for web viewing. Original exif information is given above the photos.
Negative points as a result of this review are few and far between. The camera should have a dedicated AF-assist light, independent from the flash. AF-Lock button is also kind of weird.
