In my test, I have concluded that high auto-focus speed depends on these cross-type sensors.

Cross type sensors detect contrast in two axis. This enables much faster auto focusing. The AF points that we see in the visor have these types of sensors. Count of these is directly linked with AF speed of the camera, especially in low light conditions.
It delivers maximum performance when used with F2.8 or F4 aperture lenses. A couple of F2.8 * series lenses will fit into this aim.
Here are counts of this type of sensors found in recent entry-level dslrs.
Pentax K10D has 9 of these cross-type sensors. So, 9 out of 11 AF points are cross-type.
D80 and D200 have 1 of these types of sensors and it is located in the center.
D2X has 9 of these cross-type sensors – the same number as K10D.
In Canon 350D, 400D and 30D there is 1 cross-type sensor.
In Sony Alpha 100, there is also 1 cross-type sensor.
In Canon 1D, there are 7 of them.
